Music is expression. MONTAGE adds a new level of expression with the Motion Control Synthesis Engine. This engine allows a variety of methods to interact with and channel your creativity into finding your own unique sound.

Super Knob

Motion Sequences are tempo-synchronized, completely customizable control sequences that can be assigned to virtually any synthesizer parameter and provide incredible creative new ways of programming sound. Motion Sequences also have dedicated controls on the front panel making it easy to manipulate and change in real-time, providing incredible interactivity and expression.

Envelope Follower

The Envelope Follower converts audio into a control source for control of virtually any synthesizer parameter. For example, a drum loop could drive effects parameters for a cool rhythm or a vocal recording could control multiple parameters for a “talking” synthesizer. The audio can even be a “live” source through the A/D input.

Massive Sound Creation

MONTAGE features two Iconic Sound Engines modernized for amazing sound playback and complex sound design.

AWM2

Powered by proprietary Yamaha technology for data compression and sound playback, AWM2 allows tremendous data compression without sound quality loss for unparalleled, realistic sound reproduction.

128-Note, Stereo polyphony

Experience rich stereo sound without halving the available number of notes.

Waveform Capacity

MONTAGE features nearly 10 times the waveform capacity of the MOTIF XF, allowing more samples per instrument for incredibly realistic and nuanced sound.

Integrated Flash Memory

MONTAGE includes 1.75 GB of user flash memory with high-speed reading/writing for your own custom samples or synth libraries from yamahasynth.com.

FM-X

An amazingly sophisticated pure synthesizer engine capable of producing classic ‘80s or cutting-edge, EDM sound with incredible dynamic range, power and fidelity. MONTAGE features an 8-operator FM architecture and 128-note polyphony, allowing for a massive array of sound design options.

Every instrument needs great content to inspire your creativity. MONTAGE features a huge range of incredible sounds like a brand-new Yamaha CFX Premium Grand Piano, detailed new strings and woodwinds, and select content from the DX and TX family, all modernized to take advantage of the Motion Control Synthesis Engine.

[Compatibility] MONTAGE is directly compatible with Motif XF Voices. Yamaha is developing an FM converter to make it compatible with DX7 series Voices as well.

[Bösendorfer Piano] As part of the MONTAGE introduction, Yamaha is pleased to offer an incredible Bösendorfer Imperial Premium Grand Piano.

Effects

From high definition reverbs to incredibly detailed Virtual Circuit Modeling (VCM) effects, MONTAGE is loaded with DSP innovation, power, and most importantly, sound quality. Use effects like Beat Repeat, Vinyl Break, or Bit Crusher to get a modern EDM sound. You can even add a compressor with a sidechain for a modern “ducking” effect. Or go retro with vintage effects like Analog Delay, VCM Phaser, or a variety of Amp Simulators. Piano players will appreciate piano-focused effects like Damper Resonance for a super-realistic piano experience and the HD reverbs that let you put yourself in any performance space.

Pure Analog Circuit

MONTAGE features professional balanced outputs with “Pure Analog Circuit” (PAC). PAC improves the quality of signal after being converted to analog from digital for clear harmonic reproduction and even frequency response. The result is an output capable of reproducing MONTAGE’s internal content expressively with power and clarity.

USB Audio/MIDI Connection

Connect MONTAGE to your computer with a single USB cable and capture every nuance of your creativity into your DAW. MONTAGE’s powerful USB driver can send 16 and receive 3 channels of STEREO 24 bit/44.1 kHz digital audio to/from your computer or iOS device (MONTAGE is class compliant, no driver needed!), no other hardware required! The USB connection also features full MIDI support of 16 channels.

* MONTAGE supports the sampling rate up to 192 kHz.

SSS (Seamless Sound Switching)

Seamless Sound Switching (SSS) lets you change performances seamlessly without any cut-off in envelope or effects. This is perfect for live performances where you end one song and start another without stopping.

* This function is only available for Performances that have a maximum of 8 parts.

A/D Input

The A/D input processes external audio sources with your instrument’s DSP. Use mics, guitars, or any line source as an input and process with the internal effects. You can even use these sources with the Envelope Follower or Sidechain for a truly unique sound.

MONTAGE features a comprehensive set of physical controls for intuitive music making and sound creation.

[Touch Screen] Select and change parameters directly with the new color touch screen.

[Eight Rotary Encoders and Faders with Stepladder LED] Stepladder LEDs next to the faders indicate position making it easy to see where your current mix position is.

[Keyboard Action] MONTAGE is available in three different configurations:

• MONTAGE6 and 7 feature the premium FSX semi-weighted synthesizer action with aftertouch in 61 and 76 keys respectively.
• MONTAGE8 features an 88 key, fully-weighted Balanced Hammer action with aftertouch. This provides equal resistance for each key across the keyboard and is perfect for playing a variety of instruments from acoustic piano to electric piano, synth sounds, organ, and more!

Live Set

Live Set lets you organize your Performances however you want without copying, changing order or renaming. When a Performance is selected, you can easily register it to a Live Set. This is perfect for playing gigs or even creating your own organization scheme for Performances.

Direct Control Assignment

Direct Control Assignment assigns controls at the touch of a button. Simply select a parameter, hit the Direct Control Assignment button and move the controller to control that parameter. It’s easy!

Cubase AI Bundle

Where did the name MONTAGE come from?

The word “montage” is commonly used as a movie editing technique, combines multiple Videos shot from different perspectives into a continuous cut. It is also used as a photographic technique, combines fragments of various pictures into one single picture. Our new flagship synthesizer is named MONTAGE with a hope to be recognized as a symbol of a musical technique using MOTION Control, which is the main feature of it. Also, Motion Sequence that provides incredible new ways of programming sound similarly comes out from the concept of MONTAGE.

What is Motion Control?

The Motion Control System is a completely new feature for variably controlling Motions (rhythmical, multidimensional sound changes) in real time. This amazingly powerful feature dramatically and dynamically alters the sounds of the instrument in new, never-heard-before ways—changing texturally, rhythmically with the beats, providing cool, colorful lighting effects, and responding expressively to your creative passion. The Motion Control System has three main functions:

1. Super Knob
2. Motion Sequencer
3. Envelope Follower

What is Super Knob?

Super Knob is a Macro controller for creating multi-dimensional sonic changes, and enhancing those changes with colorful, continually shifting lighting changes.

Super Knob can be controlled by Foot Controller?

Yes. You just connect your Foot Controller (FC7) to the FOOT CONTROLLER2 jack.

What is Motion SEQ?

The powerful Motion Sequencer feature lets you dynamically change sounds by operating Parameters depending on sequences created in advance. It provides real-time control for changing sounds depending on various sequences such as Tempo, Arpeggio, or the rhythm of externally connected devices.

What is an Envelope Follower?

Envelope Follower is a function for detecting the volume envelope of the input signal waveform and modifying sounds dynamically.

What is LIVE SET?

MONTAGE has a Live Set function for easily calling up Performances as you play onstage. Once you’ve stored Performances in the desired order, you can concentrate fully on your playing and never be at a loss on which to choose.

What is SCENE function?

Each Performance can have 8 SCENE settings. You can assign different “snapshots” of important part-related parameters such as track mute status and the basic Mixing setup to the SCENE [1] – [8] buttons as Part Scenes.

What is SSS (Seamless Sound Switching)?

MONTAGE has SSS (Seamless Sound Switching) function for switching between Performances smoothly without any notes being cut off.

What is ABS (Audio Beat Sync)?

ABS (Audio Beat Sync) is a function for detecting the beat of the audio signal input from A/D Input and synchronizing the beat with the Motion Sequencer or Arpeggio.

What’s the biggest difference from the MOTIF series?

Is there any data compatibility with the MOTIF series?

Yes, MONTAGE has Voice compatibility with MOTIF XF. Also has some compatibility with old generation MOTIF series. For more detail, please CLICK HERE.

Is there “Voice” on MONTAGE?

No. There is only the Performance. Voice of MOTIF XF included in MONTAGE as single part Performance.

Are there All of MOTIF XF Preset Voices on MONTAGE?

Yes. There are 1,353 Voices (128 * 9 bank + 72Drum Kit + 128GM + 1GM Drum Kitas Performance.

Same? MOTIF XF voices on MONTAGE and MOTIF XF voices on MOTIF XF.

They are very similar but technically not identical. MONTAGE has a more improved sound engine than MOTIF XF and different analog circuit boards. Some of the voices sound different slightly, depending on the voice selected.

MONTAGE can load DX7’s sound library directly?

By using “FM Converter” (tentative name) available in May, you can load DX7’s sound library to MONTAGE. For more detailed information, you will be able to get in April.

Maximum polyphony is 128?

AMW2: 128 and FM-X: 128, so 256 poly in max. These polyphonies don’t depend on processing resource, you can use always.

Are there any expansion options for MONTAGE?

No. MONTAGE already has flash memory and USB Audio/MIDI onboard.

Can I expand the capacity of User flash?

No. You can use onboard 1.75 GB for the User area.

MONTAGE can be used by 16 part Multi timber?

Yes. MONTAGE’s Performance can have 16 parts in max.

*All the preset Performances are made within 8 parts.

Effect bypass function is available?

Yes. MONTAGE has this setting in UTILITY. But you can access this setting directly by just push the “FX” icon. All screen has “FX” icon.

Does MONTAGE have Digital Output?

MONTAGE does not have Optical/Coaxial digital out, but MONTAGE has USB Audio. You can use digital out via USB Audio.

MONTAGE has a “Master Keyboard” function?

Yes. There are setting in Utility and each Performance.

Does MONTAGE have DAW Remote function?

No.

Does MONTAGE have a Sampling function?

No. But MONTAGE can load WAV files.

Does MONTAGE have a Fully-functional Sequencer?

No. MONTAGE just has the simple sequencer “Performance Recorder”. It does not have an edit function.

Balanced Output is available?

Yes. MAIN OUTPUT and ASSIGNABLE OUTPUT are Balanced Output by TRS Phone. Of course, you can use Unbalanced cable as usual.

Can I record to MONTAGE itself?

MONTAGE features a Performance Recorder (built-in multi Track sequencer) for recording your keyboard performance as MIDI data. This function allows you to instantly store the phrase which comes to your mind. You can create full, complex multi-instrument arrangements and complete Songs, using DAW. And when you connected USB flash memory to MONTAGE, you can record Audio data to the USB flash.

MONTAGE can play MIDI file and Audio file?

Yes. The compatible format is the following:

• MIDI: MONTAGE original format and SMF format0/1
• Audio: WAV (44.1 kHz/24 bit/Stereo or 44.1 kHz/16 bit/Stereo)

Ten key is available?

Although the physical ten key is not exist but software ten key is available on some functions and parameters.

Network function is available for MONTAGE?

No. it’s not planned to have this function currently.

Are there any Demo songs onboard?

Yes, each Performance has a demo phrase by Audition.

MONTAGE bundles Cubase AI?

Yes, MONTAGE has a downloaded version of Cubase AI 8.

Is there any PC/Mac software for MONTAGE?

We will release the software “MONTAGE Connect” in Autumn 2016. This software has two functions, “Recall” & “Performance record transmission”. For more detailed information, you will be able to get in April.

Does MONTAGE have PC/Mac Editor?

No, it’s not planned to release currently.

What kind of OS does MONTAGE have compatibility with?

What kind of USB driver MONTAGE can use?

Can MONTAGE connect with an iOS device for using the App “AN2015” or “Music Remixer”?

Yes. MONTAGE has compatibility with Class Compliant, so you can connect and use those App. When you connect with an IOS device, please use Apple “Lightning – USB Camera Adapter”.

What’s the difference between MONTAGE6/7/8?

The keyboard is different. MONTAGE6 has 61 keys FSX keyboard, MONTAGE7 has 76 keys FSX keyboard, and MONTAGE8 has 88 keys BH keyboard. System specification and Tone generator are the same.

How fast is the start-up time?

Around 17 seconds.

Does MONTAGE supports the USB Wi-Fi-adapter?

No.

MONTAGE can use Bluetooth wireless MIDI adaptor MD-BT01 or UD-BT01?

Yes, MONTAGE support both MD-BT01 and UD-BT01.

Does MONTAGE work as an Audio Interface?

Yes, MONTAGE works as following:

• 44.1kHz: Send 16 Stereo channels to DAW and receive 3 Stereo channels from DAW
