How Your Child Can Be More Motivated To Learn Piano

Whether you’re the one who encouraged them to take up piano classes for kids or they were reeled in by their mild interest in the musical instrument – they may one day, experience boredom during the journey.

The start of the ride feels fantastic – the thrill of learning something new just gives them the chills; in a good way, of course. Your child is a new learner, and all the keys, scales, and chords seem a bit challenging as well as exciting.

However, suddenly the ignited fire in their heart for piano starts to flicker – and it seems like it may burn out anytime.

All hope is not lost, though. As a parent, you can extend a helping hand in a couple of ways – and we’re going to show you what they are!

1. Look for inspiration

Who said that your kid’s only inspiration could be a famous musician?

Scrap that thought – it could be anyone or anything even! He or she could be motivated by their love for music.

Each time they listen to their favourite song – they get all fired up and ready to run to the music room and start playing the piano.

If you’ve noticed your child humming or singing in the showers – tell them to give it another shot by learning the piano version of their cherished albums and songs.

Going for the basic piano lessons may give them the fundamentals – but it’s still up to them to develop the drive for this musical instrument.

2. Keep it interesting

Any one time your child feels bored or exhausted from being unable to keep up, is a sign that they’re losing interest.

It’s completely normal – every musician has struggled at some point in their learning life. Some no longer find the practice interesting while the other bunch are close to giving up because they’re experiencing difficulty learning piano.

Organise a party for your child and his or her friends. Then incorporate piano music together with the planned games – for example, let your child have their turn at ‘controlling’ the music’s pace during Musical Chairs.

Meanwhile, for fast learners who pick up songs quickly – maybe, it’s time to raise the difficulty level by setting a milestone they absolutely can’t miss.

For instance, with Chinese New Year coming up – you could challenge them to master a song or an entire list of songs by then to play during the gathering. It will get them all worked up and ready to take on the test and tackle it.

3. Make a routine

Sometimes, finding motivation is as simple as building a precise routine to follow daily. Piano practice is all-or-nothing for piano learners.

You either perform your best or don’t do it at all. You can’t stick to the piano if you don’t make it your habit and hobby.

A perfect piano learning routine doesn’t involve hours of practice – but rather, it’s developing a daily piano practice routine that your child can follow.

Remember, it’s about taking your child’s pace and learning ability into consideration – it could just be as little as 30-minutes practice every day.

4. Find a favourite style

There are all kinds of piano styles out there – from classical piano, musical theatre piano, jazz piano, liturgical piano to pop-rock piano.

So, which one best fits your child’s taste or ability? It’s up to both you and your little one to find out!

You could play a couple of different pieces randomly and see which one they’re more intuned with. Try putting on a piece during dinnertime or early in the morning before they head to school – the one which resonates with them best is the chosen piano style.

But if they’re interested in more than just one style – let them try them all out. As tough as it sounds, a little challenge every now and then keeps anyone fired with enthusiasm.

Whether they have been taking grand piano or keyboard piano lessons – the same applies to both; passion and motivation are key. Pave the way for your kid during their piano learning journey and show them the beauty of this astounding musical instrument!
